The storm took its toll on migrating birds. Large flocks were trapped and many were found dead on our property. Lina found this injured, but alive female Purple Martin. She got it to eat some bread, but they are  pretty exclusive insect eaters. The migrating group does not contain all the members of a certain colony. That way that colony will continue next year even if some are lost to storms. This one may be from way up north, even Canada. They started migrating the first part of August.
Someone saw from above that many seagulls and pelicans were trapped in the eye in the calm air and could not get out through the high winds of the eyewall. It looked strange to see all those dots in the eye. It took a while to realize they were trapped birds.

The Aransas  County Appraisal District has finally released the appraised values for our condos. They show no rhyme or reason to me. One two bedroom on the bayside is appraised at $184,870 and another on the bayside at $266,160. Three bedroom condos range from $278,580 to $210,750. Several two bedroom condos are appraised at more than a three bedroom condo. In one case they are next to each other in the 500 building.
A few years ago the appraisal chief decided to start taxing the furnishings of condos up for rental since the furnishings were being used to produce income. These values are all over the place. The highest is a two bedroom condo in the 200 building where it is at $9,130. Some are not taxed at all on contents.
To make protests more difficult, the 2017 values were not shown online until after the protest period had ended. I may have been a part of that. Last year the owner of a condo in the 300 building asked me to protest for him. He was far above condos around him and I went in with all those numbers for identical condos. I think the appraiser decided that would not happen again and now they don't release the current year values until it is too late to protest.

DATE: 8/14/2017
ROCKPORT – After consulting Aransas County officials and the Aransas County Navigation District, the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) today permanently closed both sides of the Copano Bay Fishing Pier to the public due to the deteriorated condition of the 86-year-old wooden structure.
TxDOT’s Bridge Division performed a structural survey of the pier earlier this month after a short section of the pier’s south side collapsed in June. No one was injured in the incident.
The structural survey found: “Overall, the remaining standing portions of the fishing pier are in significantly distressed condition. The two spans that have collapsed are evidence that the structure can collapse with little notice. It is recommended that the remaining portions remain closed to the pedestrian and vehicular traffic.’’
The navigation district, which operates and maintains the facility, said the boat ramp on the south side will remain open to the public.
The future of the pier will be determined following an environmental study and coordination with state and federal agencies.
Aransas County officials and the navigation district plan to work together to explore options for a replacement pier.
